Narbonne’s Les Halles, covered food market and historic site

Narbonne’s Les Halles, a century of gastronomy in the heart of Languedoc

Voted the most beautiful market in France in 2022, Les Halles de Narbonne is a must-see during your stay in the town.

As a covered market for fresh produce, Les Halles brings together local farmers and producers from the region on a daily basis.

A brief history of Narbonne’s Les Halles

The project to build Narbonne's Halles began in 1871, but work did not start until 1898 and was completed in 1901.

A competition was organised in 1892 to decide who would manage the project, and it was won by the Marseille shipowner André Gabelle, while the construction work was entrusted to the architect Léopold Carlier.

Les Halles is a Baltard-style pavilion, named after the former Paris architect Victor Baltard. The complex comprises a rectangular building with few partitions to make it light.

The main entrance under the clock opens onto a wide walkway running right through the building, with twelve secondary walkways running perpendicular to it. This is reminiscent of the urban planning of ancient Rome.

Renovated in 1993, the Halles retains the same architectural style as when it was built.
